Skaface Returns Part II
I can claim that going to this show was much better than going to the Warped Tour. This year's line-up was lacking when it came to ska and punk bands.
The Makehshift Heroes started the night off right, instantly getting the crowd out of their seats and onto the small dancefloor. I've seen these guys so many times it is hard to write something new about them. This unfortunately was my last time seeing them before Ben heads off to Montreal. I hope it isn't too long before I see these guys again.
The Liquidaires started their set with a lot of their ska influence tunes, which made people stay out on the dancefloor. I enjoyed them more on this night than the other two times I saw them. These guys are extremely talented and I'm sure would whip an all ages crowd into a frenzy. It was good to see these guys play a gig with other Toronto ska bands.
So this was my second time seeing Skaface. Unfortunately, they did not have a horn section on this night, but borrowed Yvo and Chris from the other two bands. This made for a more punkier Skaface, but still a very solid sound. I was surprised, as I was the first time I saw them, the sheer number of songs they know. They played for a very long time, right up until the sound guy asked them to wrap it up. They even covered Millie Small's Lollipop (probably the most famous ska song out there). Skaface is another band that the underage ska fans really need to see.

Return of General Rudie
When I heard the line-up for this show, I said to myself there is no way I am going to miss this show. The bands playing were just too damn good.
One Night Band played a similar set as the other 2 occassions that I saw them perform, which isn't a bad thing at all, as it is a killer set. Everything about this band one will most likely enjoy, from the brass to the organ, singing, bass, etc. Their French accents are also very attractive (more so on the ladies).
If you frequent this site much, you will know The Donuts are one of my favourite local bands. They played really well tonight. They just always seem to be having a lot of fun while keeping a serious look. They played a couple of new songs which I first heard at Sneaky Dee's. I can definitely say I"m a fan of them. As they usually do, they played one of my favourite songs by David Hillyard.
So this was my third time seeing General Rudie in 5 days. To no surprise they played just as well on this night as the other two shows. They played consistently well, and had a little more crowd interaction this night. Even got Phil to come out to the dance floor to skank a bit. I can't wait until they comeback again, Toronto misses you when you are gone...
General Rudie Strikes Back
One Night Band played just as well as they did one week ago. The crowd response they got was even better, which was really nice to see for a touring band. If you didn't fork over the $6 for the CD they were selling, you are missing out. Well worth it to listen to again and again until they decide to come back.
I didn't like One Size Fits Most's set as much as I did in Ajax. It was still pretty good, but just felt like something was off. It was hard to describe what, but like I said, they still played pretty well. If you haven't read the comments yet, yes, they have a cute horn section :P
Last time I saw SKrAtch 3 was back in February for when Skaface retunited. I believe I commented how difficult I find it to dance with them changing the temp a lot, but for whatever reason, I found their music a lot more danceable this time around. The crowd was definitely having a fun time, which you could tell was just pushing the band that much more.
The Makeshift Heroes returned from their tour out west just hours before the show. They played quite set. Definitely rivaled when the set they played when they opened for The Slackers. According to Dancing Diego, Victoria just ate up these guys, and represented the Toronto ska bands very well. I'm so proud and glad they had the opportunity to play the Victoria Skafest and would have went in a heartbeat if I could. Congrats guys and keep up the good work.
General Rudie closed off the night playing extremely well. This is another band where each member is fully pulling its weight. It is a shame that I only get to see them once a year. With the talent these guys, Lo and the Magnetics, and One Night Band have, it makes it very tempting not to move to Quebec.

General Rudie
HES opened the show. They are a young band out of the Guelph area. They were decent for how long they have been together. I wouldn't mind seeing theses guys in couple of months and see how far they have gotten.
It was night and day when comparing Explosure's performances between this one and when I saw them in Sarnia. They have come such a long way. Definitely a more refined sound. They played extremely well, so much better than in Sarnia. If they continue with this sort of progression, nothing will stop these boys. They stepped up to the plate for this show. Good job.
The Red Rockets are a band I've been wanting to see for awhile now. I found myself digging their sound. I was sad to hear they trimmed their horn section, as you all know, I love it when it comes to horns and wind-instruments, like the saxophone. It would have been interesting to see these guys will a full horn section, but at the same time, they played very well as is.
General Rudie was simply amazing. It is a shame they are from Montreal, as I could see these guys once a week and I wouldn't get sick of them. After hearing their first two shows didn't bring out that many people, it was really nice to see Guelph show some love this band deserves. I don't know why they don't draw as much as The Planet Smashers because they are good enough to. Great show guys.
Ill Scarlett Plays the Edge
So, it had been far, far too long since I had seen Ill Scarlett perform. With the aid of a few fans, I was able to sit front and centre on the Edge steps to get some good pictures and listen to some sweet music. If you haven't heard, Ill Scarlett has been recently signed to a music label. It is of no surprise for the hard work they have put in and the quality of their music. Be sure to check out Jerry's CD review of illP. Anyways, they played a very energetic set that got the crowd moving and singing along. I definitely won't be waiting this long to be seeing them play again.
Trad Ska to Dub to Ska/Punk
One Night Band were off the hook. I don't think I've been blown away that much by a band I had never heard before. Covering tracks like 5446, Pressure Drop, Simmer Down, and doing them justice, leads to a very good live performance. It is a shame these guys are from Montreal, as I'd love to see them more often.
The Knockouts played another great show. This being only my second time seeing them, it feels like I have seen them many more times. I guess it can be attributed to catchy tunes, especially Peanut Buddha. They have been playing a crazy amount of shows of late, so if you haven't seen them yet, I highly recommend trying to catch one of their shows.
The only thing I disliked by The Next Best Thing's set was that it seemed a bit short. But like always, this ska/reggae/dub band played amazingly well. They always seem to put on a top notch show. Each and every member could make it as a solo artist. It leaves one pondering why these boys aren't signed.
Tonight was the night I fell in love with Angry Agency. The last couple of times I had seen them I had started to like them more and more, but tonight pushed it over the top. It would be hard for one not to like these guys for how much energy they have, singing a good political message, all with a ska-punk musical backing. I almost spent $40 to go see them the next day in Barrie, but lacked the funds to do so. One of these days I'm going to have to make it to a London show of theirs.
Last up was Keepin' 6. These boys are following the path Ill Scarlett has paved for them, being able to fill school buses of Mississauga kids to bring to Toronto shows. It seems their fanbase is just as plentiful and loyal as Ill Scarlett's. Like the other bands on the bill, they played really well tonight. It is no surprise they are as popular as they are in Mississauga. I can only see that popularity expanding to other cities.
