Frankie plays the 2-Tone
Since the Pylons and Ill Scarlett show started later than I expected, I was worried I wasn't going to make this show. I got to the small blues' bar at 12:45. Frankie Foo and the YoYo Smugglers were still going strong. When a friend and I got to the show, there was about 30 people sitting down. We starting to skank, and I think it got the band energized a bit. If you haven't heard of these guys, they play ever couple of weeks at Grossman's Tavern (one block south of College and Spadina). They play mostly 2-tone ska, and were really good. They played until 2:15, for a total of approximately 3 hours that night, which is just insane if you ask me. They played about 25 songs, but I saw a list of over 40 songs of which they play regularly! The infamous Prince Perry even belted out a few tunes for the band. I had an amazing time at the show and ended up a good time talking with the band afterwards. Just a bunch of really great people, playing great music. I highly recommend people (who are of age) checking out one of their shows. Prince Perry (co-host of Toronto's only ska radio show, Ska Party, with DJ Skip) also belted out a few tunes for the band.
Pylons & Scarlett for Charity
Well it has been a month since I have gone to a show, and it feels like it has just been way too long. So to make up for it, I went to two shows.
The show started really late, well unless the first band wasn't suppose to go on until an hour and a half after doors open. There was a DJ playing some music, and although it was decent, I am almost positive people attending the show weren't there to see the DJ. The Pylons played a set that I was a little disappointed in. Three or four of their songs were ska, a few other songs I enjoyed, and then the other half the set I just wasn't digging at all (it wasn't bad, just not my "cup of tea"). Maybe I just wasn't use to the new sound that was being expressed in the songs I haven't heard before. I found that without a horn player, that their songs just felt like they were missing something. This was proven even more when they a former Pylon came up and played sax for two songs. I'll have to wait until I hear their new CD before I change my opinion on these guys just yet.
This was only my second time seeing Ill Scarlett perform, and although I really enjoyed the first time I saw them, they blew that show out of the water tonight. They were really on tonight, and played a really great show. They coverd Walking on Sunshine very well, getting the crowd really into it. It looks like the 360 and Ill Scarlett go hand-in-hand, as when they performed their CD release party there last year, it brought a sold out crowd of 400+ people. These guys left me a good mood as I moved on to my next show that evening.
The show was sparesly attened due to the fact that the 360 changed the show from being all ages to 19+, unless you were a Ryerson student. I know the bands were really upset by this, and apologize that their fans couldn't be told sooner about this. It was definitely out of their control.
