Lo and the Magnetics

Lo and the Magnetics!!!
2005-10-22, Horseshoe Tavern - Toronto, ON

I totally was not drunk enough for this show. Perhaps it was the expensive beer or perhaps it was just that it wasn't tasty. At least as a result I can remember enough about this show to write a review. Anyways, the bands were way better than the beverages and it’s a shame that the PACKED crowd that came to see IANEYE did not stay to see a great Lo and the Magnetics set.

IANEYE brought out their massive and kudos to them. They have been working hard at getting a local scene interested in what they are doing and their determination is paying off. Their sound is slightly like Bedouin Soundclash or acoustic Sublime but with more of a Marley feel to it. It makes you wanna move and groove but makes your heart warm at the same time. Great onstage chemistry and vocals helped pull off a show that delighted the audience.

Lo and the Magnetics continued to impress and enlighten. They are trying to shake and bake a smorgasbord of ska, alt-rock, 80's pop and current techno sensibilities. This band has finally stopped evolving and now is making their mark with songs that dip and rise; rock 'n sock; and stew and groove. Even with the occassional technical snafu mucking things up, the band still put on a fitting farewell to jolting bassist King Kong Girio. The only thing I thought took away from their show is when they dug into their past to play an old francophone cover a la ska. It just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the set. The crowd that did stay got a good doze of what this band is capable of and judging by the response, totally enjoyed every minute of it.

The Flatliners

Action Fused
2005-10-15, Scout Hut - Cambridge, ON

This was the first time I had ever seen The Johnstones play; I had heard good things and was extremely impressed. The Johnstones set was infused with action, enthusiasm and sheer fun. Running around the stage, interacting with the audience and making people dance is what makes a good band a great band. If you ask me, they stole the show.

I’ve seen the Flatliners many times and they never cease to amaze me. They are always a friendly and approachable bunch of guys. Although they are not as in your face as The Johnstones, their fast paced, lyrically fused songs make you want to move. They are punk-rock packed.

NOTE: Claudia took the pictures as well!

The Next Best Thing

The Next Best Thing @ The Edge
2005-10-15, Edge Studios - Toronto, ON

This was the first opportunity to pick up The Next Best Thing's latest CD. I was fortunate enough to get a copy fromt the band. I had been listening religiously to their new songs they every once in awhile posted on their web site and on their myspace account. The live performance of Can't Do Me No Wrong is just as impressive as the recorded version is. An amazing band, with an amazing cd. They truly are the next best thing...
