Frankie, Frankie, Frankie!
This was my second time seeing Frankie Foo with their new sax player. It was also been along time since I had seen them at Grossman's. Although I saw them at General Rudie's last show, it had been awhile since I saw them before that show. Like the last show I saw them at, they played their 3 or 4 new songs that they do. It feels like they are slowly moving from their 2-tone sound to a more 60's Jamaican ska sound. I can't wait to see what these guys have in-store for us now.
The Johnstones CD Release!
It had been far too long since I had seen Angry Agency. I love these guys so much. They bring the rock like you wouldn't believe, with lyrics that actually mean something. You Look Sweatshop Good is insanely catchy that makes you want to dance, while North American Greed is just great all around. I definitely need to see these guys more often.
So Brent from The Johnstones had to play bass for Keepin' 6 due to an injury. It was nice to hear some of their newer songs again. They played a pretty good show considering they didn't have their regular bass player with them. They definitely got the crowd going for the other two bands.
I have seen The Salads under five times in my life. They are pretty good, but my only real complaint is that they have been playing the same material for awhile. With a new cd release in the works, it will be refreshing to hear some new tunes. They have been together for along time, so their sound is pretty tight (as it should be). If you want to see a well-polished show, that got them on MuchMusic, check these guys out.
I finally started to enjoy The Johnstones a lot more at this show. Maybe it was all the hype with the cd release. I'd say they did really well, almost selling out the Opera House is an accomplishment for any band, let alone a local band. I wasn't too surprised to be honest, as I know how well-liked these guys are by their fans. They played a really great set, with an amazing amount of energy. They didn't disappoint one bit.
Stop, Drop, n' Skank
I was finally able to catch one of Stop, Drop, n' Skank's shows. I must say, I was more impressed with their following than anything. They are a high school band, but it is like their whole high school goes out to see them at shows. It was absolutely insane. They were going crazy for them. They weren't half-bad, but they definitely could use some work. Nothing that a few years experience and song writing can't fix. Watch out for these guys in the future.
Prince Blanco!!!
Well, I ran over from The Kathedral to catch this show. This was the debut show for Prince Blanco and the Rocksteady All-Stars. After hearing their EP, I was quite excited for the show. Marc and the band did not disappoint one bit. Covering some of the best hits from the 1960's and 70's. Being able to hear such songs is a true delight for me, as I'll probably never get to hear them sung live, so when they are done exceptionally well, it just makes it that much more special. I don't think you could have asked for a better show. I can't wait until we get to see these guys again.
DJ Ironwill was spinning old ska, rocksteady, and reggae at the show. He spins at the Cloak and Dagger on College once a month (last Saturday of the month I think, starting at 9?). He really knows his shit, and has a great collection which he plays from. If you ever get the chance, go see him DJ!
The Expos/One Night Band Tour
This was the send-off show for The Expos/One Night Band tour. Unfortunately, I had promised a friend I'd check out his debut show with his new band. I was only able to catch Action League Now!'s set. They were missing their sax player on this night, and it was their first show without Adam, their trumpet player. They did pretty well all things considering. There is definitely something missing without Adam, but I'm sure with some minor changes it won't feel like there is something missing.
A big thanks goes out to Stacey at Skacake Promotions for putting on a great show. I hear the rest of the show was just amazing.
Stomp Takes Over Hamilton
This show line-up was absolutely stacked. It was part of The Expos/One Night Band North American tour, along with The Planet Smashers, along with Baked Fresh Daily's last show, along with The Johnstones. I unfortunately just missed The Expos set.
It had been awhile since I had seen One Night Band (not surprisingly as they come from the Montreal area). Their new songs are absolutely top notch. Rolling the Dice will instantly get you moving even if you hate ska. Their cover of Rescue Me is one of my personal favourites, and No, No, No makes you wish Jac was singing to you personally. I can't wait to see these guys again, I know it won't be soon enough.
I found out at the show, that this was Baked Fresh Daily's last show. It is a shame, as I found them to be getting better, and better with each time that I saw them. They seemed to be having a great time on stage, as were their fans that were dancing it out on the dancefloor. We wish them all the best.
I enjoyed The Johnstones a lot more this time than I did at their show in August. It still didn't blow me away like they did when I first saw them two years ago. Even if I have become less of a fan of them, their following is starting to get ridiculous. They are as well-known in cities just outside of Toronto, as they are in Toronto. Everyone there knew the words, and were dancing and singing along (except the 19+ crowd of-course).
The Planet Smashers took off right where The Johnstones left the crowd and kept them going throughout their set. My lenses got fogged up due to the sheer heat of the crowd. This had happened only once before, which ironically was at another Planet Smashers' show, but it was because the AC was broken. It was a great set put on by a great band. They'll be back in 3 months.
